Provided by AGP“Alhamdoulillah (All praise is due to God). Tonight, I will sleep with a light heart in the city of Keur Gorgui,” Sonko stated on his official accounts following the announcement.
Authorities did not disclose any formal explanation for the dismissal.
The move follows several months of growing friction between Faye and Sonko, who were previously regarded as strong political partners within PASTEF (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity), the governing movement that assumed power in 2024. Their alliance reportedly weakened because of disagreements over party leadership, state management, and financial strategy.
According to available details, Faye eventually invoked his constitutional powers to oust Sonko, emphasizing the necessity of safeguarding national stability.
Faye’s action also resulted in the dissolution of the cabinet and the removal of all ministers, based on a statement delivered by Oumar Samba Ba, secretary-general of the president’s office. “The members of the outgoing government are responsible for handling current affairs,” Ba said. He further noted that the president is expected to designate a new prime minister and form a fresh government in the coming days.
